As part of my art project, I took inspiration from Koeh Sia Yong, specifically his painting: Orchestra in Equator Art society. From his work , I begun to correlate links that I would include in my inspired painting.
Koeh Sia Yong was one of the five pioneers of the equator art society, I have shown this in my painting by including the five stars of Singapore in my background, referencing to his impact on Singapore. The background of my painting also includes shards of the colours of the flag reflecting each other, showing how Koeh Sia Yong has used Singapore’s excellent education that he had, and how he gave that back with his tremendous efforts towards the country.
Within the corners of my painting, are one of the parts of Koeh Sia Yongs history, and what lead him to this painting, in the bottom left, is the section that represents the time that he devoted to his passion: art. In fact, it was 50 years that he spent using his iconic thick brush strokes to convey his ideas. The bottom left corner of my painting represents this by taking on a rough and polygamous appearance, to show how those 50 years have shaped him, its dark colour scheme further emphasises this rocky and sharp cluster of shapes.
This part of my painting describes a different part of Koeh Sia Yong, but in the same way as before, I have used the 3 primary colours, to represent the 3 years he spent in art school, and chose this to show how these 3 colours can come together, to make so much more, a metaphor to the 3 years in art school, and what they allowed him to do. Coming from this section is a path of music notes that lead to the 50 years that he spent painting, to show what these 3 years allowed him to do.
The top right represents the final part of Koeh Sia Yongs journey, when painting this, I made it look cloudy, and openly expanding, that was because this part of my painting represents his imagination, I chose to use white, as it is the combination of all the colours, showing freedom. Next to this are the digits ‘200’ to represent the 200 paintings that he made.
In the top left of my painting, is the digit 4, which is the representation of common time, and the four aspects of an orchestra, Cello, Violin 1, Violin 2, and Viola. Finally, in the very middle are the digits:’68. To represent 1968, the year the painting was made.
