The artwork that I chose to do an interpretation of is ‘Orchestra in Equator society’. This painting was painted in 1968 by artist Koeh Sia Yong. It shows various people in their youth playing traditional Chinese instruments. In the background is a poster of war and militaries. In red Chinese characters is a phrase about protection and freedom, this may contribute to the motive of the orchestra. The artist uses a range of muted blues, greens and yellows to create this painting. This may symbolise the time they were in and how it was dull and uninteresting, therefore they wanted freedom. My interpretation of Orchestra in equator society includes a similar colour schemes and merges music and dance together as one. I chose this artwork as music and the arts resonates deeply with me and that I find extremely important. The mediums I used were coloured pencils, and paints. The reason I selected these specific mediums were because paints can create the texture of gentle and soft strokes as well as more abstract and rough lines. Coloured pencils on the other hand are used for finer details, especially in the ballet shoes. On the bottom left corner of my page is the number eight, this is significant as you count in eights in music and in dance. There are black music notes in the top right corner of the page, I painted it in a way that it looks smoother rather than using jagged and straight lines. Dance is something extremely special to me and I’m passionate about it. Dancing is a form of freedom, which is a message the original painting conveys.
