My inspiration for this piece of work was the painting War and Peace by Hendra Gunawan. It was painted in the 1950s. Gunawan was a fighter in the Indonesian revolution in the 1940s. He also was an Indonesian painter best known for his combining of Western painting techniques and traditional Indonesian aesthetics. War and peace has cool blues and turquoises, with dark accents showing the figures of two Indonesian revolutionary fighters. The fighters dominate the canvas. A mountain or gunung is seen in the far distance. One of the fighters is bluish green, while the other's skin tone is normal human colour. The use of the gunung is also very common in Indonesian art. I chose this painting because I like the way one painting can show two opposite things (war and peace). I chose the numbers 1965, one, 45,000 and four for my paper cut. Each number represents something different that is related to me or the Indonesian revolution. 45,000 reflects the number of soldiers killed in the War of independence, I decided to use reds first to use the stencil and then turquoise. The number one, which I have repeated multiple times and cropped out, represents the day Cameroon got its independence and 1965 because that is the year that Indonesia got its independence I decided to lay a branch with leaves over everything to show the contrasting colours of the foreground and the background. I used mainly blues, greens and turquoises in my painting. When thinking about stencils, I chose small squares with light, soft blues and purples to show peace and tranquillity. The story of this painting relates to me in a direct way. I am from Cameroon, and they had to fight hard to gain its independence just like the Indonesian War. My artwork is a modern version of the original painting that show conflict and peace at the same time.
