The artwork I was inspired by is a painting titled "War and Peace."  Hendra Gunawan's "War and Peace" is a vivid expression of the artist's perception of social dynamics and national identity, depicted through his distinctive style. Painted in 1977, this artwork embodies the cultural and historical narrative of Indonesia, particularly reflecting the tensions and aftermath of various conflicts, including the struggle for independence. The depiction of soldiers is central to conveying the themes of conflict and resilience. These soldiers are portrayed with exaggerated features and expressive postures, a hallmark of Gunawan’s style, which blends elements of surrealism and expressionism. This artistic approach allows him to vividly express emotional and social critiques. The background of the painting is as rich in symbolism as it is in colour. It typically features an Indonesian rural landscape, possibly alluding to the foundational role of the countryside in Indonesian society and its revolutions. Gunawan's choice of lush greens and earthy tones not only highlights the natural beauty of Indonesia but also signifies fertility, growth, and hope amid adversity. This is also the reason I picked the colour green for one of my stencils and different shades of green on one side of the painting. In Hendra Gunawan's artwork, the use of cool colours often carries deep symbolic significance, enhancing the emotional and thematic depth of his paintings. In a painting depicting scenes of war and peace, the colour blue evokes the sombre realities of conflict and the hopeful peace that follows. This is also why I picked blue for most of the stencils and different shades of it on the right side of my painting. The reason I picked the number “3”as one of the stencils on the painting is because there is mandatory military service in China (the country I was born in) if you are drafted into the army. While the number ‘156’ is the time Hong Kong was under British rule. This reflects on the 124 of Dutch rule on Indonesia from 1816-1941.
