My inspiration for this piece of work was the painting War and Peace by Hendra Gunawan c. 1950s. In the 1940s, Hendra Gunawan was a revolutionary fighter for the Indonesian war. He belonged to the Lembaga Kebudajaan Rakyat (LEKRA), the cultural organization of the Indonesian Communist Party. He lived from 1918 - 1983, and deceased at the age of 65 years old. In this painting, there are two figures of Indonesian revolutionary soldiers that are outlined by sinuous black accents against a study in cool blues and turquoises. The boxers take up most of the canvas, and the smooth brushstrokes give the image an otherworldly quality. I personally love the way the brush strokes slide throughout the painting. I used the numbers, 4, and 6 in my painting because there were 444,000–666,000 PAVN/VC military deaths in the Vietnamese war. In two languages, the word "Danger" was inscribed in a large yellow triangle that I also had, as a warning of impending conflict. A gun, which is a representation of the guns in the painting, is placed next to this large yellow triangle. I used stencils, masking tape and a touch of a paintbrush to create this artwork. I chose the painting “War and Peace” because my grandfather had fought in the Vietnamese war, and this painting seemed very similar to one of his old pictures kept safely with him. When I first saw this painting, I thought of my grandfather and decided to do a painting based on this piece.
