During our trip to National Gallery Singapore we looked at a few brilliant art pieces including the majestic War and Peace by Hendra Gunawan, an Indonesian artist, sculptor and guerilla fighter who was born in Bandung, the capital of West Java, in 1918. He was very passionate in his political views and dedicated his life to the fight against poverty, injustice and colonialism. He unfortunately passed away July 17th 1983. The artwork War and Peace shows a variety of warm tone colours including turquoise, green, orange, yellow, blue and maroon. The majestic mountains in the background inspired me to base my artwork on one of the countries I’m from - Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is well known for their vibrant, exotic mountains. The artwork is partly about Sri Lanka’s ex-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa who led the country into dreadful financial crisis which is still ongoing today. Sri Lankan rupees are scattered on the outside, I also added a sun in the middle of the composition which includes some Sinhala writing on the side and within the circle. I added some of the common phrases from during the Protests that took place at the time - (Gota Go Home) and added the number 18 the centre and two more number 18s on the bottom and top of my painting. The number 18 represents the day Gota rose to power on 18th Nov 2019. I also painted the top of the mountains a maroon red colour, to represent the blood of all people who died because of this horrible crisis and at the bottom used a variety of greens. I painted the outline of the sun with a satay stick dipped in white paint.
