My inspiration for this piece of work was Raden Saleh’s oil painting: “Forest Fire”. Saleh was an Indonesian painter and was considered to be the first “modern” artist from indonesia. He lived through 1813-1880. His paintings were similar to the nineteenth-century romanticism which was popular in Europe at that time.
I like how the artist has positioned the different animals and has shown the smoke arising in the background as it provides a sense of urgency in the animals.
As you can see, the numbers I chose to use in my painting are 75 (which has been repeated and rotated twice) and 1.4% (cropped out). I chose these numbers because 75 is the percentage of tigers that live in India because it is where I was born and the 1.4% (cropped) which is the amount of trees that were lost caused by fires in Singapore (where I live), between 2001-2022.
In the painting, I have put orange stripes at the bottom to symbolize the stripes on a tiger but also orange color to signify flames (the fire). As you can see, on the painting I also put rectangular blocks of different shades of blue and pink circles on the top right to represent the different colors and swirls of the sky.
