Sebastian Smallshaw

My inspiration for this work was the painting Forest Fire by Raden Saleh. It was painted in 1849 as an oil on canvas. The artist was born into an aristocratic Javanese family and later moved to Europe. What I noticed about this painting is how dramatic the image is, there is destruction and panic in it, and I like the somber colours. When I looked at this painting it reminded me of the forest fires in Australia, so the number that I chose for my own artwork was 4 as I have been to Australia 4 times and seen the burnt trees. I noticed the composition in the painting, there is a foreground and a background. I used overlapping and rotating to create texture and an abstract composition. The story of my painting is one of terror and destruction which is what I think of when I think of fire. I chose fiery colours as the background of my painting is such as orange. My numbers and a lot of the patterns are shades of blue because there is water in the painting which I am interpreting which is a contrast to fire. In my painting there are 4 green lines with blue circles in them these circles represent the animals and how their life is being swept away by fire.
