I was inspired by Raden Saleh’s Boschbrand (Forest fire) 1849. Raden Saleh was an Indonesian artist born into a Javanese royal family with Arab descent, he often displayed his heritage in his artwork. He painted for the Dutch government or monarchy and was considered one of the first Indonesian modern artists. The contrast between light and dark colours and dramatic tones caught my eyes as well as the emotion depicted on the animals faces. In the painting it depicts animals fleeing from a burning forest on the edge of a rocky cliff. Here it shows not only hunter and prey dynamics but a variety of different animals including two tigers, a banteng, a brahminy kite, two java tigers(black and spotted), a hippo and an antelope. These animals and many other wildlife were taken from Saleh’s many expeditions. I used the numbers 8k to represent the number of people who had to leave their homes during the anti-chinese riots in burma. I also translated it into Chinese for variety. 96 was the age my great grandma was about to turn before she passed away and she was a victim of the anti-chinese riots while she was pregnant with three children, each of which were born in different countries. I used this link to represent the animals' homes being destroyed and their need to flee with the Chinese people in burma. I used a gradient of yellow to red with different shades of blue as a contrasting colour which is also present in the sky of Saleh’s painting. The gradient was used not only for effect but also to represent progression, the blocks near the top were used to represent the location while the blocks at the front were used to create the effect of a foreground. As well as that, the falling numbers give the effect of chaos present in both artworks. I used sponging to create the background and printing for the bricks which were light blue and yellow. I made the stencils for the numbers and sponged them on giving the numbers a more rustic effect that cooperates with the painting.
