My inspiration for my artwork was on Raden Saleh’s oil painting, “Forest Fire”. Saleh was a painter from Indonesia and he was also very commonly known for combining western painting techniques and traditional Indonesian aesthetics.
In my own painting, the orange of the background represents the fire taking over the forest. The blue represents water splashing away the fire and giving the forest its life back. The white/pink like peach is a neutral colour to contrast with the background and the rest of the colours. This is the same with the green and the dark blue-like purple colour up there as the 19. I chose my numbers to be 3, 2 and 19 because they all represent something to me. I chose number 2 as there are both 1 female and 1 male white tigers in the singaporean zoo and there are tigers in the artwork forest fire. I also chose 3 as I am the middle child out of 3 siblings and I must always remember to be blessed about how I was born in this world and if I wouldn’t be born in this world how I would have affected lots of different people. And my final number was 19, and I chose this number because of the recent forest fire that happened in Chile (4th of February, 2024) where 19 people ended up losing their lives to the forest fire. I did it to remember the people who lost their lives in the fire. I also used layering in the artwork as you can see with the blue lines crossing over their 3 boxes in the bottom left corner. This is also shown on the number stencils as the 19 is covering/layered over the three yellow boxes in the top right corner and the other three number stencils(the 3 and the and the 2) layered in the middle of the artwork over the three different shades of blue. The shades of the different colours also contrast with each other and with the background.
