FX Harsono's artwork, ‘What Would You Do If these crackers were real pistols?’, is a piece that makes people think about how they would act if they had real pistols. He created this piece in 1977 during a tense political time in Indonesia, when there was an election. Even though the pistols in the artwork are just crackers, they resemble guns, which makes us think about violence and war. This artwork is important because it helps us understand how art can make us think about serious concepts. In contrast, I love going to Bali in Indonesia a lot with my family and spending some time away from busy Singapore and just getting to relax with my siblings and my cousins. Bali in Indonesia is a special place and I have used my painting to explain what it is like now, in a time of peace.
Harsono’s work also might make us think about how we would react in different situations when faced with a choice. Harsono's work encourages viewers to reflect on the potential consequences of violence. The number 26 is important in Indonesian history because it refers to the 26th of September, 1965, when a group tried to take control of the country, leading to a lot of violence. It might make us think about how violence affects people, just like what happened in 1965. In my artwork I used books to represent the book that people can write in , I like this as it is interesting to see what peoples answer would be to the question “what would you do if these pistols were real?” What would you do ?
