Penelope Beacher

My artwork is an interpretation FX Harsono’s installation, ‘What would you do if these crackers were real Pistols?’ The artwork is a pile of roughly 200 pink gun shaped crackers, with a desk, book and pen asking the question title.

The crackers weren’t made by FX Harsono but he found them from a supplier seeing them with a deeper meaning. As the artist was Indonesian, he saw the piece as meeting point of different peoples perspective of what to do during a time of political crisis, and on the year of an important election. Because the answer's back then would be very diverse from the ones today as of the Indonesian civil war.

My artwork shows various connections to the piece such as the number 30N is the opposite of N03 because that is the element for potassium which is the main compound in gunpowder; the reason I chose to flip the number is because guns and violence are negatives and flipping the number can invert it into a positive impact. The flower in the bottom right corner is the national flower of indonesia and is called a puspa bangsa and is a symbol of purity elegance and simplicity. Another example of relations in my artwork is the big number 13 which is the hex code for neon pink which where the colours of the pink pistols in the art piece. But the reason for the colour of the number is red, the colour of blood violence and anger on top of a happy and joyful yellow background. This is implying that even though life and our world is mostly happy and respected there is still too much negative impact of violence and terrorism that changes the whole image of everything even if there are only a little amount compared to the positives.
