Himansh Karwa
My inspiration this painting was Raden Saleh’s Boschbrand (Forest Fire) that was created in 1849. Raden Saleh was a very inspirational Indonesian in the 19th century - the first modern Indonesian artist. I was drawn to use this painting because of the dark colour scheme an how he has depicted animals in a forest fire. Also, I am indian and normally tigers are celebrated and are quite religious in india. This links to my painting; I have used the number 30k twice, one smaller than the other to signify how wild tigers are starting to get very endangered. 30 thousand wild tigers in the 19th century, are now extinct. I also used the number 108 as it is a sacred number in india, that represents nature and destruction - closely linking to what happens in Boschbrand. Lastly, I used 1.8bn because 1.8 billion tons of Carbon Dioxide ( CO2 ) is emitted into the atmosphere annually from forest fires. In my background I used a nice shade of dark and dirty blue on one side and light blue on the other side to show how the earth is going from nature to pollution. I created the different layers by letting each major section dry, while I do another section. 1 challenge I faced when creating my painting was choosing what colour should I use for each part - whether I should go lighter or darker, or which colour will perfectly contrast with the other colour ! In my artwork, I chose to show India a lot, because I’m from india, and I’m proud to show it .
