The inspiration for this artwork, was taken from renowned Indonesian artists famous painting, Boschbrand (Forest Fire). Raden Saleh was a pioneering Romantic painter from the Dutch East Indies of Arab-Javanese ethnicity. He was widely considered to be the first ‘modern’ artist from Indonesia, a massive and impressive feat. He spent a lot of his life in Europe, and this painting was actually a gift from Salah, to the current king of the Netherlands. As you can see, my painting is one of the Union Jack, the flag of the UK. This has a personal link to both me and the painting. I have found a link between me and ‘Forest Fire’ through colonisation. Indonesia was colonised by the Dutch East India Company in the 1600s, and in 1922, the British Empire, was at its peak. As I am British, this is my link. This brings me onto another point. The Numbers I have used on my painting, consist of the number 51. The british empire colonised 105 countries, 51 of which are still currently Commonwealth countries. The shapes I have used, are triangles. Miniature versions of the blue ones on the Union Jack.
