Dancing Mutants by Hernando R. Ocampo (28 April 1911-28 December 1978).
Hernando R. Ocampo was a Filipino National Artist. He is also fictionist, a playwright and editor. I loved how expressive the dancing mutants painting was and the beautiful colors that it used. The number 10 in the center of the eye was used to mark the 10th year anniversary of the Ukrainian war. To create the texture I used water to soften the card and then ripped areas from it, I then used a sharp object to pull back the top layer to create the illusion of flesh. The reason I chose this concept was because I come from a Ukrainian background and I am very passionate about the war. Each detail of this painting contributes to the meaning behind it and no colour or shape is left unexplained. The main part of the piece is a worn out and dying sunflower, the sunflower is representing the Ukraine as it is the national flower of the country, the colors of it also match that of the inspiration painting (Dancing Mutants). The darkness of the creation and lack of highlights represent the ash from the fires and bombings. In the middle of the sunflower you will notice a blinded eye which represents how the world is blind to the horrors taking place in Ukraine and how they choose to ignore the sunflower and let it slowly die. But despite, this the sunflower still has hope and is still blooming despite the blood and violence happening. The canvas itself is art as well as it is torn in some areas. As insignificant as a canvas seems, I tried to give the illusion that it was alive and was bleeding from being torn.
The Ukraine will soon see peace and will soon be revived to the beautiful country it once was.
