Hernando R. Ocampo was a leading member of the Philippine Neo-Realists, who broke away from idealized depictions of their country after World War II. In Dancing Mutants, the artist reacts to the plausible horrors of the atomic bomb. With shapely rhythms of reds and greens, the work is reminiscent of Philippine flora and fauna which influenced his distinctive abstract style. The flattened perspective draws attention to and complements the harmony of forms and colors. This is what inspired me for my painting.

In my artwork "Dancing Mutants Interpretation" the choice of colors and imagery intertwines with the concept of mutants engaging in a dance amidst the backdrop of wartime devastation. The vibrant and contrasting colors of white, red, and pink symbolize the emotional spectrum of the mutants as they navigate through chaos and resilience. In "Dancing Mutants," the depiction of the Japanese skyline holds a profound significance linked to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.

The stenciled airplane dropping bombs onto the cities serves as a stark reminder of the destructive impact of war, juxtaposing the mutants' dance with the harsh reality of conflict. Meanwhile, the inclusion of the number ‘2’ subtly references World War II, this looks bold and stands out against the serene background of Mount Fuji with blue streaks below.
