Thelonious Williams

In my painting, I aim to explore the theme of angels and devils through the careful use of colour and composition. The mellow yellow tones symbolise the purity and orderliness associated with angels, while the intense dark 'maroon' represents the chaos and darkness associated with devils. The number that I chose was 11, selected because angels and devils are almost similar but very different, and I seek to highlight the similarities and differences between these opposing entities.

Initially, I encountered a challenge with the pastel 'whitewashed' yellow, as it's cute and innocent nature did not effectively contrast with the deep maroon background. To address this, I chose to enhance the vibrancy of the yellow by layering additional strokes, creating a more visually striking contrast. I also incorporated various shapes and patterns within each segment of the painting to add a sense of organised chaos. Ultimately, my painting serves as an exploration of the struggle between good and evil, encouraging viewers to reflect on spirituality through deliberate colour choices and a thoughtful artwork.

During the process of painting Celestial Rhapsody, I enjoyed the freedom and abstractness of the painting. I could express what was in my mind directly onto the canvas. I also wrestled with the problem that being too creative might lead to a mistake, but I found it fun to realise that this painting is open to interpretation, making art a conversation. Celestial Rhapsody did not force me to make any difficult decisions; rather, it was based on my opinions in the moment. I also manipulated the surface using stencils and a dry brushing technique to make the eleven and using wooden cut-out shapes to make prints of the shapes you see on the right side of the painting.
