The inspiration for my painting was taken from Boschbrand (Forest Fire) by Raden Saleh. The numbers I chose for my piece are 45, 2029 and 19000. I chose 45 because my grandparents were living in the area where the black Saturday bushfire eventually spread to in Australia. They only had 45 minutes to get all their stuff and evacuate from their house. Fortunately their house was only minorly damaged, but 2029 houses were not so fortunate. 2029 houses were burned down during the black Saturday bushfire. The last number I used is 19,000, this represented the amount of frontline workers that were involved during the fire. The green and brown background shows nature and the brown fiery burning colour. The texture also shows the fire moving towards the green. I used a lot of bright reds, oranges and yellows, I used these colours to represent the flames. I also used small flame stencils, these just added a small accent to show fire. The red squares show the fire spreading and the different shades really show fire throughout the artwork. I used a dark green for 2029 showing nature, I also added some black blotches to show ash after the fire. The Black Saturday Bushfire is such a significant fire in Victoria. This fire killed 173 people and spanned around 26 days in 2009. I thought this related to the artwork Forest fires because there is lots of nature around that is getting burned. You can see the smoke and ash in the sky and you can also see the nature that is so beautiful being threatened by fire. While making my art piece I made and used stencils of flames and my numbers, using a sponge to apply paint, I also used bolster wood to create my squares.
