My inspiration for my piece is the artwork ‘What would you do if these crackers were real pistols?’ By the Indonesianartist F.X Harsono. His work questions the publics opinion during the time of an important election in Indonesia, when the regime were in charge post- independence. My piece is linked to the time in the late 20th century calledApartheid, where people were segregrated by race. This piece is linked to me as my family is South African and bothmy Grandfather, my mum and her sisters lived through this awful time. The numbers 1948 and 1994 show the datethat apartheid started and finished. The number 46 represents for how long the apartheid lasted. 3.5M stands for the number of black South African citizens that were removed from their households and transferredto an only black community area. The area was controlled by the police and no communication between thedifferent races were allowed, otherwise they would face jail. During the time there were many riots, and the policewould drop purple rain on people to show that they were at the riots, then, they would later be jailed caught with thepurple stains on them. This is why I have incorporated pink and purple tones through-out my work. My final number21K shows the amount of people killed due to political violence.
