The work I chose as my inspiration was ‘Dancing Mutants’ by Hernando R. Ocampo, who was alive between 1911-1978. Ocampo was a Filipino artist, who was considered a leading figure in Philippine modern art, he did abstract painting and often used bold colours and biomorphic shapes. Dancing Mutants, to me, looked like flowers and plants, which gave me the idea of the rose. While it looked like flowers at first, I also interpreted it as flames and fire. I later found out that Dancing Mutants was based on a movie about the atomic bomb, this allowed me to imagine a bomb in my piece. In Dancing Mutants I loved the bold colours and natural elements of the artwork.
The number I chose for my piece was 12, I chose this number as I am 12 years old, and I am born in 2012. I wanted to represent Dancing Mutants in my piece as much as possible but not in a copying style, I used fire at the bottom to represent how many people connect the painting with flames. I also wanted to use a rose to show how other people interpret the Dancing Mutants as flowers. I painted a bomb, to show that Dancing Mutants was painted after Hernando R. Ocampo took inspiration from a movie about the atomic bomb. I used a blue-ish teal colour for the background to contrast the orange fire and complement the red rose. I would count my artwork as surreal. I used abstract designs for the background with splashes of different shades to create a texture and a realistic rose and leaves. Overall, I think my piece represents me and Dancing Mutants very well.
