My inspiration for this piece was the artwork ‘Dancing Mutants’ by Hernando R. Ocampo. Hernando Ruiz Ocampo was born on the 28th of April 1911, and passed away on the 28th of December, 1978. He was a Filipino national artist in the visual arts. He was also a fictionist, playwright, and editor. Ocampo was typically known for his abstract paintings. Following in modernist traditions, he used bold colour palates and biomorphic shapes inspired by both his country’s landscape and both science fiction writing.

This piece is about life. Dancing mutants embed a human-like figure, which I believe may be Christ. Therefore, I based my colours merely on the colour palette of the artwork, as well as Christianity linked colours. For example, I added specks of black, indicating the small sins people create throughout their lives. The number ‘13’ is my current age, where I put that at the bottom, which is where I start my life. I then chose ‘83’ which is the average death rate of Singaporeans. I chose Singapore as this is where I feel most at home, as I was born and am currently living here, although it is not where I am from. My artwork also includes mirrors, which makes the viewer look at themselves, interconnecting the artist and viewer together. The artwork will make everyone have slightly different interpretations, as you will see yourself in the context of my artwork.
