Arthur Clarke
My inspiration for this artwork was Hernando R. Ocampo’s Dancing Mutants which features abstract red and green organic shapes. Hernando R. Ocampo was a neorealist that painted abstract images inspired by the flora of the Philippines, with undertones and symbolisms linking to war. I think that this also has lots of specific historical context because the painting and colours are inspired by world war ll and the nuclear bombs. The colour red was used to symbolise the destruction and horrors of war and the green was used to symbolise nature. I chose this painting because I like the shapes and the simpleness of the colours. Another reason that I chose it was because of the hidden picture in the centre, if you look closely there is a figure that appears to be engulfed in flames or nuclear fall-out. In my interpretation painting, I have included the same reds as in the painting in my poppies, I also took the idea of World War 2 by adding the letters ‘BOMB’ at the top of my painting. To add to my WW2 interpretation I added the numbers ‘479’ and ‘159’ into my painting, I got these numbers from the place where I go most in the holidays, Nottingham, England, the ‘479’ corresponds with the amount of bombs dropped in the Nottingham Blitz and the ‘159’ corresponds with the amount of deaths caused in the Nottingham Blitz during WW2. This painting stands as my own response to Ocampo’s painting.
