My painting explores the coexistence, contrast and chaos of colors and textures. The blue pi (π) is dominant and centres the painting. Surrounding it, the smooth, layered blue and yellow scrapes contrasts with the sharp, harsh pink streaks and yellow circles. I used a rough brush to lay down a blue background. I used a metal knife to create the streaks and to layer the blue and yellow strokes; I used a cardboard ring to stamp the yellow circles. Finally, I used the same rough brush to paint the pi.
The painting Boschbrand (Forest Fire) has influenced and inspired my artwork through how chaos and peace coexist in the same scene. The intense movements, the struggling animals, and the dramatic lighting create a feeling of wild, chaotic energy. Yet, at the same time, the way nature surrounds them - the soft sky, the calm, flowing river - brings a sense of harmony and peace. Even in the middle of conflict, there is a natural order, a coexistence of life and death.
I chose the number pi because I believe it represents something infinite and irrational, never repeating, yet it holds the key to understanding the structure of the world around us. My friends call me irrational and reminded me of the number Pi. Pi also symbolizes the idea that some things can never be fully understood or contained, much like art itself.
