My response is inspired by ’Broschband by Raden Saleh. Raden Saleh is an Indonesian artist, known for classical style paintings with lots of energy, colour and dramatic use of light.
I chose this artwork because I was drawn to the tragic tale shown in the artwork, and it reminded me of global warming and the increase in naturally occurring forest fires-especially the recent ones in Australia. I think this piece is very engaging as there is so much going on in just one frame.
In my painting, I used the motifs of footsteps as a reference to us-the humans who are the reason global warming is happening. I also included the sun, which symbolises the world getting warmer over time. The background resembles the birds view of the earth on fire, with ash and flames rising overhead.
One challenge I faced during this artwork was that I found that my colour palette was mismatched. I faced this by balancing out the colours by only adding new things in tones of green, I think this did help balance all the colours out.
