This piece was inspired by the installation 'What Would You Do If These Crackers Were Real Pistols?' by F.X. Harsono in 1977. F.X. The installation is made up of a pile of pink gun-shaped crackers and a desk and notebook for audience’s responses,Harsono was an important figure in Indonesia’s New Arts Movement, a group which emerged in 1975 and sought change through new art forms and contemporary practices.his work was a political statement against Indonesia’s past President Suharto’s authoritarian rule. I used the numbers 3,19K and 5 in my paintings. The number three corresponded with the three times i have seen a gun go off and the stripes and circles represent the uniform and the sameness of everyone under an authoritarian rule. The number five represents the five different colours in the installation. The 19k represent the number of unregistered guns in Singapore. In my painting I decided to overlap 2 19k on top of each other to create a bold sort of pop art font of the number. In order to show the consumerism of it all and to draw inspiration from the way big capitalist companies will use bright popping colours and words to try to grab your attention. In the upper left corner there are a couple of squares in a mitral motif. I decided to draw military into it because i thought it was an important part of how as a society we have been desensitised to gun violence in the media.
