My inspiration for my piece of work was the painting ‘Dancing Mutants’ by Hernando R. Ocampo. I found comparisons in this painting to the current Israel-Gaza conflict, as the painter of dancing mutants meant his painting to be an image of Hiroshima after the nuclear bomb- a time of chaos. Many of my Uncles and distant cousins live in Israel and one of my Uncles is even serving in the Army for this conflict. Some of the symbols I chose for the painting are also special. The watermelons I have stencilled are the symbol of protesters pleading for the war to stop. The number 71 represents the distance in kilometres from Gaza City to Tel Aviv. The number 2 that is written in Hebrew represents the 2 weeks I myself have spent there during my summer break for my distant cousin's wedding. The number 11 represents the amount of weeks in between my stay in Tel Aviv and the first Palestinians who entered Israel. The long stripes in the middle represent the wall in between the Gaza strip and Israel's border. The 3 squares on the right are the colours of the Israel and Palestinian flags mixed together. The Dancing Mutant painting that I am interpreting has green areas with red dripping throughout. My painting also symbolises these deaths and how they must be avoided at all costs just like during Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings and the Gaza-Israel conflict where many innocents are being killed.
